Simple genius

Nick is a genius.

Not in a Mensa or rocket science kind of way. Or even in a savant, prodigy, Ph.D. way.

He's a genius of Albert Einstein’s wisdom: “Everything should be as simple as it is, but not simpler.”

Nick was my drive-through bank teller.

More accurately, he was the king of drive-throughs.

Nick created the most socially interactive banking experience in town through his genius of simplicity.

During our first interaction, Nick asked, “Do you prefer to be called Richard?”

Into the microphone, I replied, “You can call me Rich.”

And so, he did…every time.

Nick leveraged information on my deposit slip and transformed a common banking transaction into a meaningful encounter that cultivated an ongoing business relationship.

I remained loyal to Nick’s drive-through lane because I got to hear my name and enjoy some banter. While waiting, I overheard him carrying on personal conversations with customers all around me. Simple and effective.

Here’s how you can be a simple genius too:

  1. Resist the urge to overcomplicate your work. It’s about people. Always has been. Always will be.

  2. Use the intel and time you have to build the business relationships you want and need.

  3. Remember that making a personal connection requires your initiative, not budget approval.

Finally, let’s not oversimplify simplicity. It’s hard work.
